كوهين تعرف على الإسلام عن طريق اتصاله بأحد رجال الدين الإسلامي كويتي الجنسية، عن طريق الإنترنت، ودام التعارف بينهما ما يقارب السنتين شرح له خلالها أمور الإسلام، بعدها أرشده إلى أحد رجال الدين الإسلامي في القدس، وعكف على قراءة القرآن الكريم باللغة الإنجليزية، بعدها قرر اجتياز كل الحدود، وأعلن إسلامه ولم يكن هو فقط بل هو وجميع أسرته.

يوسف كوهين سابقاً أصبح اسمه الآن يوسف محمد خطاب، وهو يبلغ من العمر 36 عاما، قد واجه متاعب كثيرة من وزارة الداخلية التي ضيقت عليه الخناق، ورفضت الاعتراف به كمسلم، حتى حصل مؤخراً على حقوقه من مركز القدس للحقوق الاجتماعية والاقتصادية.

أثار خطاب باعتناقه الإسلام زوبعة في المحافل الدينية اليهودية خاصة في أوساط حركة «شاس» التي كان ينتمي إليها، واعتبر أحد الإسرائيليين من نفس الحركة، أن ما قام به يوسف ضرب من الجنون ويجب معالجته، وذلك بوضع هذا الشخص في مستشفى الأمراض العقلية.

خطاب قوبل إسلامه من قبل الإسرائيليين بالرفض والتساؤل والشتم والتعجب والسخرية والخوف من اعتناق إسرائيليين آخرين للدين الإسلامي، ولم يقف الأمر إلى هذا الحد بل إن والديه اللذان لم يدخلا الإسلام كان لهما الأثر الأكبر لإثارة المتاعب حوله هو وأسرته من كثرة التحريضات التي تعرض لها بسببهما، إلا أن ذلك لم يثنيه عن طريقه رغم الصعوبات التي واجهه هو وأسرته، وهو الآن يعمل بجمعية خيرية إسلامية في القدس.
